When anyone is looking for a gas fire pit, the same question will come up time and time again – can I use a gas fire pit inside?
Let’s dive straight in and see…
What is Propane?
First, let’s talk a bit about propane and exactly what it is, as the fuel our gas fire pit uses to burn will almost certainly be propane.
Propane fire pits burn liquid propane, which is simply petroleum gas in its liquid state (which happens when kept under pressure (like in your propane tank) or below 42°C).
When you burn propane, water and carbon dioxide are given off. Carbon monoxide is also produced if there is insufficient oxygen in the burning process.
Why is this important to know? Because it is one of the key factors in whether you can use a gas fire pit indoors or not.
Can you Use Propane Gas Fire Pits Indoors?
In general, propane fire pits are not suitable for indoor use.
The primary reason is that propane fire pits need plenty of ventilation to avoid the build-up of dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is incredibly dangerous and toxic, particularly when it builds up in an enclosed space. There is a reason we should all have carbon monoxide alarms in our houses!
Some propane fire pits claim to be usable inside. In these instances, we recommend carefully checking the manufacturer’s manual for all the safety precautions you should consider and what certifications they have to allow indoor use.
For us, we find it best to stay away from using propane gas fire pits inside.
Are Propane Fire Pits Safe in General?
This may lead some to ask whether propane gas fire pits are safe.
While not all gas fire pits are made the same, they are safe to use outside where the carbon dioxide and any carbon monoxide that might be produced can be safely blown away.
In the open air, propane gas fire pits are ideal; you can also use them in a Gazebo, Pergola or under a Covered Patio. In these instances, when a gas fire pit is partially covered, we strongly recommend also installing a carbon dioxide monitor.
What kind of Fire Pit Can You Use Inside?
We don't recommend using propane fire pits inside because of the dangers of carbon dioxide.
However, it’s not all bad news, as there are options for indoor fire pits. Have you considered a bioethanol fire pit?
Not all Bioethanol fire pits can be used inside, but those with additional safety measures are ideal for indoor fire pits.
Why Are Bioethanol Fire Pits Safe to Use Inside?
Because when you burn bioethanol, all that is produced is heat, water, and trace amounts of carbon dioxide (far less than propane gas).
What it doesn’t produce is carbon monoxide, or should we say it produces it in extremely small quantities; it is not a risk.
The Benefits of Using Bioethanol
There are many benefits to using bioethanol fire pits:
Bioethanol is a by-product of the agricultural industry. This makes it not only a renewable and sustainable fuel source but also one that is far better for the environment than using other fuels.
As we’ve mentioned, it also has the huge benefit of burning clean, meaning it gives off no harmful toxins and produces next to no smoke or odour.
You also get far better heat retention because you don’t need additional ventilation like a chimney for a bioethanol fire pit.
This, in turn, means you will use less fuel to heat your room and save money in the long run.
What Certifications to Look For
Ensuring your fire pit has the correct safety certification to be used indoors is essential.
There are two key certifications to look out for in the UK – the BSI (British Standard Institution) and the EN 16647 (European Standard).
In the United States, look out for the UL1370, which is the Standard for Unvented Alcohol Fuel Burning Decorative Appliances.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Convert My Outdoor Propane Fire Pit for Indoor Use?
No, converting an outdoor propane fire pit for indoor use is not safe or recommended. The primary reason is the potential for the build-up of dangerous gases, such as carbon monoxide, which is highly toxic. Outdoor propane fire pits are designed for open spaces where gases can dissipate safely into the atmosphere.
How Does the Heat Output of Bioethanol Fire Pits Compare to Propane Fire Pits?
Propane fire pits tend to produce more heat than bioethanol fire pits. Because Bioethanol fire pits generate less heat, they are more suitable for indoor use where high heat output isn't necessary or desirable. Nonetheless, bioethanol provides a comfortable heat source with a lively dancing flame and creates a cosy atmosphere.
Are There Other Eco-Friendly Alternatives to Bioethanol Fire Pits for Indoor Use?
Yes, there are eco-friendly alternatives to bioethanol fire pits for indoor use.
An electric fireplaces are one option. They produce no emissions and are highly efficient. Some models even use LED technology for a realistic flame effect. However, we believe this is no substitute for a real flickering flame.
Final Thoughts
Can I use a gas fire pit inside? The simple answer is: no, but thankfully bioethanol fire pits are a safe alternative.
The risks associated with burning propane in enclosed spaces are never worth taking!
The environmental benefits of using a bioethanol fire pit are a fantastic bonus because it is a clean burning fuel and safe to use inside.
