There is something incredibly comforting and inviting about the warm orange glow of a burning fire. It adds a wonderful uniquely homely feel to any space, and it’s no wonder that having a fire pit as a feature of your hotel outdoor (or indoor!) space is becoming more and more popular.
Finding the right fire pit for your needs can feel like a bit of a daunting task, we know! That’s why we’ve put together our definitive guide on the best hotel fire pits. What to look for and how to choose the right one for you.
Let’s dive straight in…
What Are The Different Options for Fire Pits
Fire things first, let’s get to grips with what’s on offer. There is a wide range of options out there, but not all of them will be suited to your space, aesthetic, or the sort of atmosphere you want to build around it.
Classic Wood Burning Fire Pit
When you think of a fire pit this is generally what people picture. The crackle of wood burning in a metal pit. Reminiscent of a classic campfire in style and feel with plenty of heat given off.
Gas Fire Pit
Instead of burning wood or charcoal a gas fire pit uses propane or natural gas as its fuel source. These are great if you are looking for a fire pit with less maintenance and cleaning and turns on and off instantly.
Look for the fire pits which 'hides' the propane bottle, such as the Elementi Lafite shown below, the bottle is stored safely in the base whilst in use. Alternatively use a fire pit connected to a natural gas source, these take a bit more planning but when installed are the lowest maintenance option.
Bioethanol Fire Pit
Bioethanol fire pits are by far and away the most eco-friendly, sustainable, and arguably the safest to use. It burns bioethanol as its fuel source which is a natural by-product from the agricultural industry.
You also get the added benefit of a clean-burning flame, which means it gives off no toxins. This makes it ideal for both outdoor and indoor spaces, offering you a huge amount of flexibility.
Bioethanol fore pits have no pipes or building works required, you can simply move into position, pour in the liquid bioethanol and fire up.
Chimenea
Originating from Mexico a chimenea is an enclosed fire pit with a chimney or stack on top. It too uses wood or charcoal as its fuel and has a beautiful shape to it. Traditionally used for cooking it is now a very popular option for an outdoor fire pit.
Outdoor Wood Burning Fireplaces
These are built from metal, and similar in size to chimenea. Outdoor Wood Burning Fireplaces usually come with a flue to carry away the smoke and can be used with grills for the occasional barbecue.
What Kind of Fire Pit Should You Get?
There are few things you should consider when trying to find the best hotel fire pits for your needs.
Let’s break them down…
Think About Your Space
The space you want to put your fire pit is important and it will be one of the biggest determinants of what kind of fire pit you should get. You want to not only think about the size of the space but also how you want the space to function.
Do you want to be able to sit around the fire in full 360 degrees, or do you want the fire off to one side and direct the heat out in one direction?
There are fire pit sizes and shapes to fit just about any space. If you’re looking for something to fit a small intimate area, for example, then something like a chimenea or an outdoor wood burning fireplace could be the ideal choice as they are self-contained, offer fantastic heat, and are beautiful to look at.
If you prefer the idea of having your guests sit around in 360 degrees then your fire pit (whether wood, gas, or bioethanol) is a great option.
The space you have in mind may even be indoors in which case we recommend you have a look at bioethanol fire pits.
Think About Your Aesthetic
Your aesthetic is an important factor in choosing the best hotel fire pit for your guests to gather around and enjoy.
Again, there is a wide range of options to choose from, both in terms of shape, design, and material. There’s round, square, stack, chimenea. You can get them as a stand apart bench, as a fireplace, the list of options is nearly endless.
As well as shape, you will want to consider the material it is made from, both aesthetically, but also from a practical perspective.
What Materials Are On Offer
You’ll notice a pattern emerging but there is a wide range of materials to choose from too (the wide variety of fire pits on offer really is fantastic in our opinion!).
Let’s have a look at some of the primary choices of materials:
- Concrete - high quality cast concrete and fluid concrete is used to produce high end fire pit casts. These fire pits are incredibly strong but relatively lightweight.
- Corten Steel – corten fire pits are a particular favourite of ours and in our opinion the best materials for wood burning fire pits. Don’t believe us? Here are our top 5 reasons why!
- Cast Iron – cast iron fire pits and chimeneas are fantastically durable, sturdy, and will last you years if looked after well.
- Steel – similarly, steel fire pits have great longevity and benefit from being lighter than cast iron (if you ever want to move your fire pit)
- Clay – clay is the traditional material for chimeneas and offer a stunning aesthetic and earthy feel to your fire pit. Clay is very durable though susceptible to cracking if not maintained correctly.
What about safety?
We know that safety will be a top priority when looking for the best hotel fire pits, and it’s something we are passionate about too.
If you’re thinking about a wood-burning fire pit then you want to make sure you have plenty of space around it and it’s not in a windy spot.
Gas or Bioethanol are both well suited for smaller, more intimate spaces. They also turn off instantly if there was ever an emergency. Many of the gas and bioethanol fire pits offer offer an option of a fire screen, to provide your guests just a little more safety.
